Read Ephesians 4:25-32
“Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger.” Ok, but what if you’re not the one who’s angry? What if the anger is directed toward you, but you didn’t do anything? Then what?
He walked through the door grumbling at me. I hadn’t had time to do anything, good or bad. We’d been married long enough that I knew most of his moods pretty well. So, when our daughter asked why Dad was mad at me, I knew that he wasn’t mad at me, but at himself. I did what I could to mollify him, until he worked out whatever he had or had not done to be so upset.
“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1) If I had responded to his mood in like kind, the anger would have escalated to ridiculous proportions. Kindness and understanding helped to defuse a potentially deadly (to our relationship and our family) situation.
Please, LORD, help me to remember this the next time.
