Read: Luke 9:23

To understand this passage we must take into account verses 22 and 24 because Jesus is not only speaking about his death and resurrection but the heart condition of the saved. What does it say about the condition of our hearts when we are not willing to acknowledge, sacrifice, serve, and honor Jesus every day? Jesus tells us in this passage, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.”

This is more than just doing ‘church stuff,’ because without truly acknowledging Jesus as Lord, sacrificing our time more so than our money, and being a true servant, not just a doer, does not bring honor and glory to Jesus. I am guilty of all of these at one time or another – I can easily become wrapped up in doing ‘church stuff’ without a servant’s attitude. I can always remember to thank Jesus for the big things, but do not always remember to thank Him for the little things, such as finding the lost car keys.

As I read this entire passage, I recognized and acknowledged that I do not always put Jesus first in all things. It is my prayer that all who read this devotional will take the time to check the condition of their heart.

Adoration: God is holy, mighty, gracious, and merciful. Spend time declaring your love for Him and expressing your thoughts of praise and worship.

Confession: Ask God to search your heart and reveal any areas of unconfessed sin. Acknowledge these to the Lord and thank Him for His forgiveness.

Thanksgiving: Express your thankfulness to God for the blessings He has given you. When we consider that we deserve punishment because of our sinfulness, and instead God gives to us His love and mercy, our only response should be one of thankfulness.

Supplication: Petition God for wisdom. Offer prayers for your activities for this day and any special concerns you might have. Intercede for your immediate family and other relatives regarding their spiritual, emotional, and physical needs.
