Read Luke 14:26-27
What is a disciple? A follower of Jesus Christ, right? What does following Jesus look like? Read Luke 14:26. "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters - yes, even his own life - he cannot be my disciple.” Wow, there is no room for half heartedness!
Look at verse 27 "And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be my disciple."
These are very pointed and serious words from Jesus, who is Lord over everything. But you know verse 27 really instructs me how to be a disciple of Jesus. We all have a cross to carry; it's unique to us. No one else can carry it, only us. What does carrying this cross accomplish? To me it identifies (like it did Jesus). It tells a message (the same one Jesus teaches). Most importantly, it brings glory to Jesus. It brings honor to Jesus, and it brings praise to Jesus. That is real worship. If you’re ever at a loss of the focus of your worship, read verses like Isaiah 6:1-4 . It's the whole reason we're breathing.
