Read John 14

It seems that some of the hardest times in our Christian lives are when we wait on a word from God. This unit of our study shows us that God speaks in many ways – by the Holy Spirit through the Bible, prayer, circumstances, and the church to reveal Himself, His purposes, and His ways. With all these resources, it sure would be nice if we could dial in the answers like a table of contents for life. That would be too easy though. God often wants to build up something or smooth down something in us which cannot be done quickly or easily.

Recently, I was fortunate to experience a definite direction from God and an answer to prayer. It was a decision I prayed about for months. I sought wise counsel, wrote out a “pros and cons” list, and pondered it over and over. It was ever on my mind. God spoke through all of these ways with an answer that was clear to me and brought me the peace I desired.

The ways God speaks will not contradict each other. We must remember this, especially in times of seeking. God-pleasing behavior is always appropriate and is always the right response.

According to John 14:21, if we love Him, we will obey Him. Our God-pleasing behavior is obedience which is the outward expression of our love for God. When we hear Him speak in one or many ways, and when we are waiting to hear him speak, we must love and obey as we listen.
