January 5, 2016

Read: Psalm 51:10-17Matthew 6:33

I recently checked my computer files. I found a document containing my New Year’s resolutions from last year, along with files with resolutions from 2011, 2008, 2006, 2005, and even 1999. Surprisingly, they all looked pretty much the same. I guess I’m not very good at setting goals. Part of me wants to give the excuse that I didn’t make the goals specific enough, like that I put “watch less television” instead of “limit television to only one hour a day.” But, the truth is that some of my resolutions were pretty specific. I wanted to lose 10 pounds by my birthday, enjoy lunch with a friend at least once a week, take the dog for a walk every day . . . and so on.
This year, however, I do not intend to write any resolutions. I will make plans, sure, but they are not going to be in the form of goals that I might try to hit until I get bored with them near the end of January. Instead, I want to start my new year with a prayer. I pray that God will create a pure heart within me and daily renew me with a steadfast spirit. I pray that He will strengthen me to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. After that, everything else He has planned for me will fall into place and be added to me as well. I want to put God first.
How about you? Will you seek God first in 2016?
