Read Matthew 21:1-12
Even from my early childhood, I have always been fascinated by events in the New Testament that were foretold in the Old Testament scriptures. In this particular story, we go back some 500 years where Zachariah gave specific details of what two of the disciples were to do as Christ began His prophetic entry into Jerusalem. “Look, your King is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet He is humble, riding on a donkey - riding on a donkey’s colt.”
His humble entry on a colt took place at the time the Jews were beginning the celebration of the Passover Feast. Thousands of people, with their palm branches, lined the roadside showing homage to their “King.” In their minds lingered the memories of his magnificent miracles performed - feeding the five thousand and bringing sight to the blind.
They were shouting, “Hosanna!” (adoration, praise and joy) And yet, days later, the crowds were shouting, “Crucify him, Crucify him.”
Perhaps we are witnessing the response of two distinct groups or perhaps not. We do know that in the last days, some of His very own denied Him.
What would our response be if today, our Lord entered our city on a donkey?
The truth is, it wouldn’t really matter how we responded. Because of His undying love for us, He would stay the course - riding on a colt, and go on to pay the supreme sacrifice for our sins.
“Look, the King is coming. He is righteous, victorious, humble and riding on a donkey.”
