Read: Luke 10:1-14
Sports movies are so inspiring. The underdog pulling out a victory in the last seconds. The coach transforming players into young men with character. The broken down horse finding his heart and leaving his opponents in the dust. But, have you ever considered those who are on the scene before the hero takes the field? The one who gets no glory, no media attention, no big paycheck? An early morning scene in the movie, “Rudy”, shows Notre Dame’s lone groundskeeper readying the field for the day’s contest. He’s focused on the achievements to be made later that day and not on his own glory. No one notices him or his work; not many even know his name. Yet his pre-game work was infinitely important to the game.
Luke tells of Jesus sending out 72 “pre-game workers”. They were to go everywhere He was about to go and prepare the way. Who were the 72? Their names are unknown. They didn’t go for themselves or for money or for their own glory; they went for His kingdom. They left to prepare the field for the real work that was to come.
This week, look around for the opportunity to pave the way for the Lord’s work. “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few...” (Luke 10:2). Take your place among the workers and rejoice in the harvest He has promised.
Adoration: God is holy, mighty, gracious, and merciful. Spend time declaring your love for Him and expressing your thoughts of praise and worship.
Confession: Ask God to search your heart and reveal any areas of unconfessed sin. Acknowledge these to the Lord and thank Him for His forgiveness.
Thanksgiving: Express your thankfulness to God for the blessings He has given you. When we consider that we deserve punishment because of our sinfulness, and instead God gives to us His love and mercy, our only response should be one of thankfulness.
Supplication: Petition God regarding your family and your ministry. Ask for help and guidance in sharing your Jesus with others and helping others grow in Him. Offer prayers concerning your activities for this day and any special concerns you may have. Intercede on behalf of local, national, and world missions. Pray the Great Commission would be fulfilled and for any special concerns you may have for missions.
