Read 1 Samuel 16:1-7

Recently my husband and I were shopping for a reliable used car for our daughter. We thought we had found one that would be perfect for her. It was a top-of-the-line model, complete with all the bells and whistles. I was prepared to be jealous of her heated seats! Before we bought it from the individual who was selling it, I had it checked out by our mechanic. Sadly, he had a much different view of the car than we had. He pointed out multiple issues that were sure to soon cost thousands of dollars in repairs. We were only looking at the appearance of the car, but he got to the heart of the matter and checked under the hood. When he said to run from that car, we trusted him and broke off negotiations with the seller.

Much like our mechanic is an expert at judging cars, God is an expert at judging character. We can only look at a person’s appearance, which means we are often misled by someone who is not as they seem. God, however, looks at a person’s heart. He sees hidden motives and sins that we cannot see. Someone may hide a true agenda from the world for a time, but no one can hide from God. God knows and sees, and we can trust his prompting. When we’re in tune with Him, He will alert us when things are not as they appear with someone.

Are you in tune with God?
