Read Nehemiah 9:1-38
I did nothing wrong. In fact, I didn’t speak at all! Another at the table went on the attack and offended several others. She was wrong. Later in the evening, as I reviewed the event and grieved over my friend’s behavior, I heard the Lord tell me to apologize to those who had been wronged, not in a written note, but in person, face to face. How very odd! I apologized for something I didn’t do, and I felt cleansed by it!
I wonder if this is the way the Israelites felt as they confessed the sins of their fathers. Their confession took them all the way back to the exodus from Egypt, generations ago. They confessed sinful actions that they did not commit. They remembered the sins of their ancestors, but they also remembered the faithfulness of their God.
He hasn’t changed. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
