Read Nehemiah 8
I vividly remember attending my home church's worship service during college. Though I regularly attended local churches and Bible studies while away at college, there was something incredibly special about being at home with "my people" and hearing a message from "my pastor." Often, there were tears of joy simply because I was "at home" hearing God's Word preached and His praises sung.
The Israelites might have felt something similar in Nehemiah 8. From the time of Moses, God ordained the reading of His Word on the first day of the seventh month. But, the Jewish people had been scattered. They had only recently returned to work on the wall and restore Jerusalem - their God-ordained home. So, when Ezra, their priest, read God's Word on the first day of the seventh month, it was especially moving. They were hearing it with ears eager to hear a fresh Word!
God not only led His people home; He threw His arms open wide and welcomed them back home just as the seventh month of holy festivals was beginning! God has a knack for timing things just right, doesn't He?!
May we listen with eager ears this Sunday as God leads us "home" to GBC to hear His Word spoken over us. And, may we also - like Nehemiah reminded the Israelites - experience the joy of Lord as our strength! (Nehemiah 8:10)
