 Read John 8:36

I love our patriotic celebration service! I know it’s no longer politically correct, but my favorite part is always the salute to the armed forces. I love to see the men and women who proudly represent their branch of the military. I always get misty-eyed. My ninth grade crush was a POW in Vietnam. I never tire of hearing him tell of finally figuring out Who was in charge, and of his return to the States as a new creation.

Freedom is not free, nor has it ever been. It comes at a great cost. To free the sons of Israel from Egyptian slavery, Moses had to leave the comfort of home and family. He had to face his fears and limitations. More importantly, to free me from slavery to sin, Jesus had to leave the comfort of His heavenly home. He had to face the limitations of man. To secure my freedom, He had to suffer the indignity of the cross.

Today I’m thankful to the men and women who have stood in the gap to secure my physical freedom. More than that, I’m thankful to my Lord, Who daily frees me from the power, presence, and penalty of sin. “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Have you been set free? Let’s talk.
