Read: Psalm 84: 1-4
Visiting the tomb of King David was one of the highlights of our recent visit to the Holy Land. As we were leaving the cold, dark corridors on our way out, I noticed that on the wall in front of us was an alcove that had been chiseled out of the stone wall. Stretched across the alcove was a Star of David that had been crafted by some artisan, perhaps centuries ago. The impression was that the star was attached, somehow, to the wall by leather straps. I was fascinated enough by what I could see in the darkness that I took a picture of it. As I glanced down at my camera to look at the image, I was startled to discover that there were two doves, perched on the crossbars of the Star. Hidden in the darkness, the doves were carefully guarding their nest, nestled behind them. It seems that even today, birds seek the solitude and serenity of a Holy Place to build their nests.
The Psalmist seems envious of the birds that had the privilege that he so longed for. Of course, nothing could ever take away the joy of his personal worship of adoration and praise to God, but perhaps more than anything, David yearned for the blessing of corporate worship in God’s Holy Temple. Paul speaks of the same in Colossians 3:11 when he says: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you rightly, in all wisdom; teaching, admonishing one another in Psalms, and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Adoration: God is holy, mighty, gracious, and merciful. Spend time declaring your love for Him and expressing your thoughts of praise and worship.
Confession: Ask God to search your heart and reveal any areas of unconfessed sin. Acknowledge these to the Lord and thank Him for His forgiveness.
Thanksgiving: Express your thankfulness to God for the blessings He has given you. When we consider that we deserve punishment because of our sinfulness, and instead God gives to us His love and mercy, our only response should be one of thankfulness.
Supplication: Petition God for growth in your compassion and love toward others. Offer prayers for your loved ones and others who do not know Jesus and for those in need. Ask God to use you to tell others about Him and show His love. Offer prayers concerning your activities for this day and any special concerns you have.
