Read Daniel 5:17-31

I remember a time in my life when I really struggled with my faith.  I questioned how much of the Bible was really true, I questioned many of the stories of the Old Testament, and I questioned how much of scripture was truly God-inspired.  This led me to live life my way, giving little thought to God’s plan. Fortunately, my parents never stopped speaking truth to me. They prayed for me, they discipled me, and they loved me unconditionally.

Sometimes we need someone to give us a different perspective on things, often times a Godly perspective.  In Daniel 5, we see that King Belshazzar had clearly chosen to live the way he wanted to live. Daniel reminded Belshazzar of Nebuchadnezzar’s mistakes and how he fell from power, but even though Belshazzar knew all of this he still did not humble himself before the Lord.  Daniel spoke truth to Belshazzar - God’s truth.  I’m sure it wasn’t what the king wanted to hear, but it’s what God wanted to say.

It is easy for us, just as it was for Belshazzar, to create our own goals, follow our own desires, worship our own idols, and live our lives the way we think is best.  However, we serve a God who can redeem us despite our selfish ways.  Let us all pray that when God speaks we will listen. And let us give thanks to God for His redeeming grace!
