Read: Psalm 16:8

“Gentlemen, this is a football.”  Vince Lombardi, coach of the Green Bay Packers, stated the obvious to his team of men who had been handling a football for most of their lives and it has not been forgotten.  His simplistic back to basics approach led his team to achieve a level of excellence that few, if any, have rivaled.  By focusing on the fundamentals, Lombardi reminded his players that they had a job to do and they needed to do it well.  Crafty plays and attention seeking maneuvers may please the crowd but well-honed skills and expertise wins the game.

Who knows, Coach Lombardi may have taken his cue from Scripture which constantly reminds us to remember the basics. From Peter who in essence says, I consider it my duty to remind you over and over even though you think you already know it, these are the basics of life in Christ.  Now, remember this and do it. (2 Peter 1)  We are reminded to remember the fundamentals.  Here the Psalmist calls us to recall, to hold close, to embrace the reality of to Whom we belong.  It is the Lord our God Who has us by our right hand and upholds us.  He is forever in front where we may focus upon Him.  This is fundamental.  Though a cauldron of distractions may bubble and brew all around me, I train my eyes upon Him, I focus on the One who holds my right hand steady and my foundation is secure.  I am not shaken from it.

Pray:

Adoration: God is holy, mighty, gracious, and merciful. Spend time declaring your love for Him and expressing your thoughts of praise and worship.

Confession: Ask God to search your heart and reveal any areas of unconfessed sin. Acknowledge these to the Lord and thank Him for His forgiveness.

Thanksgiving: Express your thankfulness to God for the blessings He has given you. When we consider that we deserve punishment because of our sinfulness, and instead God gives to us His love and mercy, our only response should be one of thankfulness.

Supplication: Petition God for growth in your compassion and love toward others.  Offer prayers for your loved ones and others who do not know Jesus and for those in need.  Ask God to use you to tell others about Him and show His love. Offer prayers concerning your activities for this day and any special concerns you have.
