Read John 14:1-6
Juan, a twenty-five year old illegal from Mexico, was dropped off at the Emergency Department of a local hospital and left alone. His boss did not want to get involved.
I was called to the Emergency Department to translate - since the young man spoke no English.
How do you tell a young man that the doctor says that he has acute leukemia and that his platelets were dangerously low? He was at the point of death. When I conveyed to Juan the news, he simply replied, “If I’m going to die, I want to die in Mexico with my wife and two boys by my side.”
Caring doctors, nurses, and social workers, with love and compassion, began to perform miracles. He was given platelets to extend his life and plans were miraculously made to fly him home to Mexico. In the meantime, I began to share the plan of salvation with him and, after a simple prayer of repentance and faith, Juan asked Jesus to come into his heart. When we finished, a peaceful smile appeared on his face, and he said, “Estoy listo!” “I am ready.”
The world tries to preach a different message, “there are other ways that man is able to get to heaven.” John expresses it best when he simply says, “No one can come to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
Juan’s desire was accomplished. He arrived home before his death. When I received the news, all I could think of were his last words to me. “Estoy listo.” I am ready.
