A few years ago we adopted a homeless dog, possibly a run-away who was never reunited with his owners. One of the first things that we did was to have him “chipped,” so he could be returned if he ever tried to run again.

Online shopping seems to be taking over the marketplace.  As shoppers, we weight the convenience of browsing and purchasing with the click of a button against the downside of not being able to see, touch, or try on an item.  Sometimes we get burned.

When I was young, I wanted to learn to knit a simple scarf.  I found a ball of yarn, knitting needles, and attempted to follow instructions. Whenever I’d mess up, I would pull the one thread, and invariably, unravel the whole scarf.  The imperfect, completed scarf started with one thread and finished with one thread. One thread from beginning to end.

Recently I went an entire week without hearing my name. It’s not like I had become a recluse; it’s just that no one called me by name. And this isn’t the first time it’s happened. Sure, I’ll be called “Mom” and referred to as my children’s mom or my husband’s wife. I’ll even be called my mother’s daughter. But there’s something about a given name.

The glory of victory in the first six chapters of Joshua was suddenly replaced by the agony of defeat.  Surely there is a lesson here for all of us, that in real life, we find that our “mountain top” experiences are often followed by “valley experiences” and are usually brought on by our own disobedience.

Today in a prayer group, someone prayed “Lord, thank you for the beautiful changing sky this morning.” With all the evil that had happened in the past 24 hours in London, my mind was focused on asking for healing, peace and comfort for those families yet here someone was stopping to thank God for the beautiful blue sky.

A friend had a daughter that was on the transplant list for a liver. She had fought a hard battle, and we prayed diligently for a liver to become available for this young mother. When she was close to death, the Lord provided the new liver for her and spared her life.
